Lot 19A: CHAIM GOLDBERG (POLISH AMERICAN 1917-2004)
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: "Village Chappah", 1999 Oil on canvas 40 x 30 in (101.6 x 76.2 cm) 1999 Oil on canvas 40 x 30 in (101.6 x 76.2 cm) signed lower right, Inscribed and cataloged on the inside of the bottoM stretcher. PROVENANCE: From the son of the artist ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: Chaim Goldberg is considered to be among the leading Jewish artists of the 20th century. Exhibitions of his art work span more than 65 years and have been displayed in his native Poland, Russia, Israel, Germany and the United States, where among other museums, his work was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Born in 1917 in the little village of Kazimierz Dolny in southern Poland, where he began to paint and sculpt still as a youth. His work came to the attention of such great artists as Marc Chagall, Henryk Kuna, Antony Michalak, Ephraim Zeidenboitel and others who purchased his work. In fact, the only surviving work from the late twenties and early thirties can be found in the Chagall estate. Chaim attended the High School for Fine Arts in Krakow, the Academy of Fine Art in Warsaw and after World War II, upon his return from Siberia where he and his wife were refugees for six years, the Polish Government granted him a two-year study fellowship for advanced art at the Ecole de Beaux Art in Paris, France. His course study included work under the well-known sculptor Ossip Zadkin. In 1949, his return to Poland became a preparation to finally immigrate to Israel in 1955. He settled in Ramat Aviv, where in his spacious, new studio that was provided by his Patron Yehuda Arazi, Chaim was finally able to 'sprout his wings' and obtain release from the many years of oppression. In 1960, he embarked on a series of large paintings about the Holocaust and life before World War II, as he remembered it from his childhood. Many of his best work that are presently in the collections of the finest museums in the world were painted in that studio. In 1967, he and his family arrived by ship at the Port of New York with all his art for two years of exhibitions, which led him and his family to becoming citizens. Chaim Goldberg's art expressed itself in over a dozen mediums, and in several thousand works, ranging from the delicately pulled line engravings to the mammoth-sized wood carvings, some of which exceed 11 feet in height. In a 1971 New York Times article, the writer, David Shirey wrote, "Jewishness is what most of Mr. Goldberg's work is all about. His subject matter ranges from the daily chores of the Jewish baker or the tailor to the joys of the Jewish celebrations, the holidays and most of all the Wedding. His colorful depictions of the village (or the shtetl) characters include various market scenes, Hasidic dancers and special occasions related to festivities that have been rarely depicted by anyone else. The expressionistic style, in which he painted these depictions, belies the accuracy of the events and the resemblance of the characters to their real life counterparts. In addition to recreating the shtetl life Goldberg remembered so well, he also carried the weight of the Holocaust on his shoulders. His numerous large oil paintings that are now in the collection of the Spertus Museum in Chicago do not allow us to forget the horrors and atrocities of the Holocaust. They remind us in a very poignant manner the shameless hecatombs of Babi Yar and Auschwitz and hundreds of others. In 1973 the Nobel Prize Laureate, Isaac Bashevis Singer wrote about Goldberg in an introduction to his Smithsonian exhibit, "Because the shtetl's very essence was faith, it could not be destroyed. It keeps on living and nourishing our arts. Our roots are still there. It will remain forever the Jewish artist's address and source of inspiration. "Chaim Goldberg came from the Shtetl and remembers its every detail. He is never abstract but is true to the objects and their divine order. His work is enriching Jewish art and the image of our tradition." Isaac B. Singer
