Evidence suggests that Youghal produced delft from 1738 to 1751. This early example is one of very few known bearing a date. Its design corresponds with two other known plates which which were produced for Quakers, hence the simplicity of the design.

Decorated with symbols including: the Cap of Maintenance signifying the continuity of the Mayor and the Corporation; the Dart (at left and right) which was used in an annual ceremony whereby the Mayor, as Admiral of the Port defined the jurisdiction of Cork Harbour by throwing it off Blackrock Castle; the Mace and Sword are incorporated with the Dart; the Portcullis at the bottom was used to prevent ships entering the channel when the city was walled; the chain surrounding the coat of arms was presented by Queen Elizabeth in 1571 to Maguire Roche, Mayor of Cork. Description: 1830: Alphonse de Lamartine portrait medallion from the library of Richard Robert Madden Portrait medallion of Alphonse de Lamartine, the French poet and statesman, produced in 1830 by David d'Angers at the time that de Lamartine was received into L'Académie Française. A scarce medallion, other examples are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musée du Louvre. Notes verso confirm this piece as coming from the collection of Dr. Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886), a well known doctor and historian of the United Irishmen. Both Madden and de Lamartine were instrumental in the movement for the abolition of the slave trade in their respective countries during the mid 19th Century and this perhaps explains why Madden hung this medallion in his library. h:5.50 w:5.25 in.
