Lot 50: Arthur Spronken (Beek 1930)
Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: Horse - Signed with monogram on the belly - Bronze, H. 30.3 cm (including stand) - Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands - N.B.: In his youth Spronken was influenced both by the love of horses of his father and grandfather, and by the sculptor Paul Smalbach. He was prepared for a career in trade, but eventually attended the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht, where he was taught by Charles Vos and Harry Koolen. He studied there from 1948 up to 1952 and left for Milan for a year for an internship at the Accademia di belle Arti di Brera. There one of his tutors was Marino Marini, a specialist in the field of sculpting horses. When returned to the Netherlands Spronken at first mainly made religious figures from wood, but around 1961 he turned to working in bronze. His figurative sculptures concentrate on the dynamic movements of bodies of dancers and later on horse torsos. The dynamic movement becomes so important in the later horso torsos, that the legs of the horses are only indicated as the initiators of the movement in the torso. In 1964 he was awarded an exhibition of his works in the Frans Hals Museum. In 1996 a retrospective exhibition was organised in Scheveningen in the Museum Beelden aan Zee, where his monument of the Royal family was given a permanent place.
