Description:

William Zorach (1887-1966) pumas: a pair of bronzes the first: inscribed William Zorach 1948, numbered twice 5/6 and 6/6 [sic], with the Modern Art Foundry's cypher foundry mark and the date 1983; the second: inscribed William Zorach 1948, numbered twice 5/6 and 6/6 [sic], with the Modern Art Foundry's cypher foundry mark and the date 1983 bronze, dark green patina height: 37in. (94cm.) According to Jonathan Zorach, the artist's grandson and manager of the Zorach Collection, the present works were cast in the 1980s under the supervision of Tessim Zorach, the artist's son, to complete the original edition of 6, which the artist had ordered prior to his death in 1966. Mr. Zorach writes, "My grandparents spent a good part of the year up in Maine ... and for maN0 years my dad, who did not have a lot of vacation time, helped my grandfather out with various matters [concerning] the gallery and also with the foundries that cast his works. My grandfather always was careful about limiting the number of casts, but he also wanted my father to complete editions of his work whenever feasible." Zorach created versions of Pumas in bronze, labrador granite and lead. One set of bronze Pumas is in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and all the other bronze examples are in private collections. A letter from Jonathan Zorach will accompaN0 this lot.
