WILLIAM ZORACH 'SPIRIT OF THE DANCE' (American 1887-1966) 'Spirit of the Dance' Full size bronze allegorical figure of a dancer at the end of her performance. Inscribed: Zorach 1932 4/6 and Modern Art Foundry, New York. Brown patina. Dimensions: 77''H., base: 47'' x 31''. In the early 1930's, the Rockefeller family contracted Donald Deskey to design the interior of Radio City Music Hall. Deskey chose Zorach's 'Spirit of the Dance' to be the primary sculpture in the hall. The twice life size sculpture was cast in aluminum and was placed in the lower level lounge. Full size and 1/3 scale reductions were cast in bronze in editions of six each. According to Christie's: The full size examples are 1: Tessum Zorach, Bath, Maine. 2: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan. 3: Sold Christie's 11/30/1990 Lot 170. 4: The present example, property of an educational institution. 5: Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska. 6: Christies 12/02/2004 Lot 98.
