*William T. Ranney (1813-1857), *Arthur F. Tait (1819-1905) and *William Sidney Mount (1807-1868) retrieving signed with the artists' initials W.R./& A.F.T./& W.S.M., l.r.; also titled and signed Retrieving, by W. Ranney on the reverse and titled Retrieving on the stretcher oil on canvas 10 by 13 3/4 in. (25.4 by 34.9cm.) A remnant of an original letter reading Received from Mr. W.../for a Painting of Deer,.../and for finishing a sketch by Ranney-/...sixty for Deer/and Forty Five for the Sketch/A.F. Tait is affixed to the backing. According to Henry F. Marsh, "This painting was unfinished at the time of William Ranney's death, November 18, 1857. AFT [Arthur F. Tait] and William Sidney Mount completed the picture so that it could be sold for the benefit of the Ranney estate in December 1858" (Cadbury and Marsh, p. 320). This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's work.
