WILLIAM R. DAVIS
American, b. 1952
Pilot Schooner Hesper off Boston Light. Signed lower right "William R. Davis" Dated '94 on reverse.
The Hesper was designed in 1884 by Dennison J. Lawlor. She measured 102 feet on deck by 23 feet in beam, with a 12-foot draft. Boston pilot boats earned their revenue by navigating larger vessels through the tricky Boston Harbor islands. Pilot boats did not normally work under contract for these services, but rather free-lanced their services. Because of this, the fastest pilot boat to reach the waiting cargo ships was the most profitable. The Hesper had a reputation for being one of the fastest pilot boats in the harbor, and therefore one of the most successful.
Oil on canvas, 30" x 50". Framed.
