William Mulready, R.A. (1786-1863) 'THE DISOBEDIENT PROPHET' Signed, watercolour and bodycolour with gum arabic 18.3cm x 14cm Exhibited: Society of Arts 1848; Lancaster Relief Fund Exhibition 1863; The Lancashire Cotton Famine (1861-1865) was a depression in the textile industry in the North West, brought about by the blockade of the Southern cotton ports during the the American Civil War. An inscription on the reverse of the picture reads 'Sent by Mr Mulready as his contribution to the exhibition of pictures in aid of the fund for the relief of the Lancashire distress' 1863 - drawn some ten years previously...he always intended to paint a large picture from it.
