Portrait of a Woman, possibly the Artist's Mother signed Harnett and dated Feb-76, l.c. - - pencil on paper 5 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. (14.5 x 11.3 cm.) PROVENANCE The Estate of John Hedges The Downtown Gallery, New York Mr. William Bender, Jr. According to a letter dated June 23, 1960, from Edith Halpert to William Bender, Jr., John Hedges was a friend of the artist and collected Harnett's work during his lifetime. Mr. Hedges also acquired numerous other pictures from the two sales held after the artist's death. A copy of this letter and a letter dated June 23, 1969, from Alfred V. Frankenstein authenticating the picture accompany the lot.
