Located on Fulton Street in Brooklyn, the Halsey Building was the first home of the Brooklyn Academy of Design, founded in 1866, where free instruction was offered to the young artists of the borough. A Brooklyn resident for many years, William Mason Brown focused on landscape painting early in his career, but turned to still life compositions after 1869.
