WILLIAM LANGSON LATHROP (american 1859-1938) "PLOWING TIME" Signed "WL LATHROP" bottom right, inscribed and signed in pencil "Plowing Time WL Lathrop" on stretcher verso, oil on canvas 19 x 25 in. (48.3 x 63.5 cm) EXHIBITED: James A Michener Museum, Doylestown, PA, "A History of Art In Bucks County" November, 1991 The Gallery At Bristol - Myers Squibb, Princeton, NJ. "Up The River - The Pennsylvania Impressionists And Modernists", October 1 - November 25, 2001 NOTE: The Ely Farm located on Woodhill Road in Upper Makefield, PA LITERATURE: "Another Tonal work that depicts a specific landscape is the artist's Plowing Time, ca 1905 (plate 2); it depicts the Ely farm, which was in close proximity to Lathrop's residence at Phillips Mill. The background depicts New Jersey hills with a quarry. Lathrop was particularly close to the Elys, and he painted this work for them. In fact the Ely family owned this property since the eighteenth century. Prominent in this work is a freshly plowed field. Interestingly, several critics noted that Lathrop excelled at painting raw earth. This obviously relates to the plowing he must have done earlier on the farm in Painesville, Ohio." - The Pennsylvania Impressionists - Thomas C. Folk, pub. Associated University Presses, Inc. 1997 pg. 38 plate 2. provenance: Collection of Phillip and Dianna Betsch Bianco Gallery, Buckingham, Pennsylvania Private Collection, Florida
