Literature: Pierre Kjellburg, Les Bronzes du XIXe siecle, pp 488-89
Mercié exhibited a two metre high plaster Gloria Victis in 1874 at the Salon and a bronze version the following year. His inspiration for the group were the heroism and patriotic sentiments displayed in the military disasters of 1870 in France. British New Sculptors and particular Alfred Gilbert, were influenced by the work of Mercié. Gilbert's great sculptures of the 1880's such as Icarus and David have a similar composition and quality of emotion to the Gloria Victis.
A smaller version of the model sold in these rooms, lot 74 28th October, 2002
