VERY IMPORTANT AMERICAN WHALING JOURNAL FOR THE BARK KATHLEEN OF NEW BEDFORD, MA 19th Century
Captain John C. Marble, Master. Kept by Richard Dwelly(?), the fourth boat steerer on this voyage, her fourth, starting in New Bedford on August 25, 1857 and bound for the Cape of Good Hope and the Indian Ocean, and ending upon her return to New Bedford on August 13, 1860. Captain Marble, his wife and two sons were onboard and are included in the crew list of approximately forty names contained within the journal. The stamps and notes show the Kathleen also took barrels of oil from other whalers to be taken back to New Bedford. Approximately sixty-five whale stamps. Approximately thirteen ship stamps. A half-page drawing of the brig Ocean Ranger. Three scenes depicting men in whaleboats with comic captions. A full-page drawing of a sailor and his girl meeting upon his return (partially colored). Drawings of a cavalry officer and a sailor, and a girl and her sister(?). Text includes twenty-one pages of poetry dealing with the Kathleen and her captain and crew. The Kathleen was lost in 1902 during her seventeenth whaling voyage after being struck by a large bull whale on St. Patrick's Day. She was one of the longest-lived whale ships ever to have served in the American whaling fleet. Her history is told in a book entitled Bark Kathleen Struck By A Whale. This journal is unbound. No covers. Approximately eighty-four 12 1/2" x 8" pages. A few pages with tears and one with losses. Some toning and several loose pages.
