A GIRL CARRYING GRAPES (FORMERLY KNOWN AS SALOME)
signed with monogram and dated l.l.: 1862
Notes:
It is said that the present picture originally depicted Salome carrying the head of John the Baptist, later repainted with a more palatable subject. It is an early work by Prinsep and demonstrates the artist's admiration of the paintings of his friend Rossetti. It may depict Rossetti's favourite model Fanny Cornforth who was painted by other artists within his circle at the time.
