One is madeof cherry and illustrated in Mabel Swan, "GeneralStephen Badlam- Cabinet and Looking-Glass Maker," TheMagazine Antiques, May 1954, p. 383. The other ofmahogany and satinwood was once in the collection ofBenjamin Flayderman and sold at the American ArtAssociation, Anderson Galleries, Inc., AmericanFurniture from the Collection of Benjamin Flayderman,Boston, cat. 3908, April 17-18, 1931, no. 82.After serving in the Revolution, General Badlamoperated an extensive cabinetmaking shop on old PlymouthRoad in Dorchester Lower Mills, Massachusetts. Theproximity of his shop to the Neponset River allowed himto ship his products to other North Shore towns.Consequently, he conducted business with many othercraftsmen and patrons, such as Thomas Seymour, whoapparently sold furniture made by Badlam in his Bostonwarehouse, and Elias Hasket Derby, the wealthy Salemmerchant. In 1791, Badlam built for Derby the piece forwhich he is best known - a chest-on-chest intended as awedding present for Anstis, daughter of Elias and hiswife Elizabeth (see Gerald Ward, American CaseFurniture, 1988, no. 82, pp.171-7).A closely related tiger maple candlestand attributedto Badlam with a similar pineapple-carved column andarched spider legs with crosshatch carving and spurreddetails is illustrated in Antiques and the ArtsWeekly, January 11, 2002, S-13.
