NOTE
Rowlandson visited Brighton with Henry Wigstead in 1789. The racecourse is situated on the Downs and, in Rowlandson's watercolour, the sea can be seen in the distance. Four horses are nearing the winning post and both sides of the course are crowded with numerous spectators in vehicles, on horseback and on foot. A cheering crowd also fills the stand at the finish
