indistinctly inscribed Copied 1868 by Thomas Hicks?/from the original painted by/R.W. Weir on the reverse prior to lining oil on canvas Red Jacket (circa 1758-1830) was the chief of the Seneca Indians. His name was inspired by the brilliant red jacket given to him by a British officer whom the Seneca supported during the American Revolutionary War. Although he made his hostilities toward white men known in a 1786 meeting of Indian tribes, he had a change of heart and later advocated making peace with the United States Government. President George Washington presented him with a silver medal in 1792. The present work is a version after Robert W. Weir's portrait of Red Jacket in the collection of the New York State Historical Association Museum and Art Gallery, Cooperstown, New York.
