Notes: This watercolour was drawn in circa 1793 when Girtin was 17 or 18. It may be compared to Rochester Cathedral and Castle from the North East (The Provost and Fellows of Eton College, Windsor), and like that, it is not known whether Girtin drew the castle from nature or perhaps more likely as an apprentice, was able to take the subject from a sketch by another hand.
