oil on canvas, unframed The present painting was in the collection of Edward Pleydell-Bouverie, second son of William, 3rd Earl of Radnor. His great grandfather, William 1st Earl of Radnor was an important patron of Gainsborough and commissioned a series of portraits of his family in the early 1770's. Gainsborough also visited Longford Castle several times and made a copy of Lord Radnor's landscape by Teniers. The Radnor account books list a number of payments to Gainsborough and it is tempting to suggest that the payment in October 7th 1779 of £42 to ``Gainsborough for a picture'' could relate to this landscape which might have remained in the artist's studio until then. This unusually large landscape dates from circa 1770 towards the end of Gainsborough's stay in Bath. It is similar in scale with Wooded Landscape (Iveagh Bequest, Kenwood, see fig. 1), which was painted for Lord Bateman, Wooded Landscape with Lovers (Lord Jersey), and Extensive Wooded Landscape (Philadelphia Museum of Art). Its fresh, light tonality and striking freedom of the brushwork also recalls Rocky Wooded Landscape (Faringdon Collection). It is the first picture in which Gainsborough explores the picturesque possibilities of setting a country house in a landscape, an idea to which he was to return to during the 1780's, in both paintings and drawings.
