Allom' (lower right and lower left respectively) pencil and brown wash, heightened with white 5 x 71/2 in. (12.7 x 19 cm.) a pair (2) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Christie's, South Kensington, 18 November 1985, lots 41 (illustrated as pl. 14) and 42. with Agnew's, London. ENGRAVED W. Floyd and E. Radclyffe for France Illustrated..., 1845-7. LITERATURE The Rev. G.N. Wright, France Illustrated, exhibiting its landscape, scenery, antiquities, military and ecclesiastical architecture etc., London and Paris, 1845-7, II facing p. 10, and III facing p. 50. G. Bauer, Le SiŠcle d'Or de l'Aquarelle Anglaise, AnthŠse, 1998, p. 127, pls. 172 and 171, illustrated in colour. NOTES The present drawings were executed as part of the series of 96 drawings for France Illustrated, published in 1844. The author comments on the two buildings: 'The fa‡ade of the sumptuous palace extends nearly one thousand feet, and the Pavillon d'Horloge, its majestic centre, commands a view through a long vista of aged chestnut trees across the Place de la Concorde, the Champs Elys‚es and the Triumphal Arch, to the beautiful bridge of Neuilly, a distance of three full miles' (Wright, op. cit., II, p. 10). 'A new charm has, however, been conferred upon the garden of the Luxembourg as the fountain-head of the roseries of Europe. For the gratification of Josephine,.... most of the finest modern roses have had their origin at the Luxembourg' (Wright, op. cit., III, p. 51).
