signed Th. Robinson and dated1891, l.l. oil on canvas 18 1/4 by 23 in.46.4 by 58.4 cm. This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's work being compiled by Ira Spanierman and Sona Johnston. After playing an instrumental role in the founding of the Art Students League, Theodore Robinson, a Wisconsin native, travelled to France to study under the tutelage of the renowned Carolus-Duran. Although he would only live to the age of 43, Robinson, a gentle, physically frail young painter, would become one of the pioneers in the evolution of American Impressionism. While in Giverny in 1888, his exposure to and subsequent friendship with the reclusive Claude Monet left a lasting imprint on his development as a painter. According to Sona Johnston, this relationship would serve to synthesize tendencies already apparent in his art in the mid-1880s. The degree of his devotion to Monet's impressionism is obvious; however, through the selection of those elements most sympathetic to his manner of expression, Robinson managed to achieve a personal impressionistic style. In the present work, the painter depicts the traditional subject of peasant women going about their everyday chores, a theme that was prevalent in nineteenth century Barbizon paintings. In contrast to Monet, Robinson applies a somewhat muted palette and, as is typical of his works during this period, he pays particularly careful attention to the effects of light and shadow, emphasizing the atmospheric qualities of the scene.
