Lord Henry John Montague-Douglas-Scott, 1st Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, M.P. (1832-1905), Politician, was the younger son of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. He began his career as a member of the Conservative Party, and, in 1861, went into Parliament for Selkirkshire. In 1867, he married the sister of Lord Wharncliffe and was elected for South Hampshire the following year, a seat he held until after 1881.

Lord Henry is a devoted partisan, a practical landlord, a ready speaker, a shrewd man of business, and a pattern of the domestic virtues. He has a proper pride of family, and he is well-bred and amiable to all those who happen to come into contact with him.

Vanity Fair, 'Statesmen', No. 373, 1881.
