NOTE
In this portrait of Marie-Anne Weber playing the violin, van Rysselberghe displays his talent as one of the principal talents working in the Post-Impressionist circle. The chromatic discoveries led by Seurat and Signac set the stage for divisionist painting that was in full stride by the mid-1890s. Together with Georges Lemmen, van Rysselberghe was one of the very few painters to put the pointilliste technique at the service of portraiture. Van Rysselberghe was also one of the few followers of Seurat who fully mastered the application of paint in small dabs of complimentary and contrasting color. The present work is a lyrical example of his technical command and artistic expression.
