None This classical table is known as the ``wedding cake'' table, since it held the wedding cake of Duncan Phyfe Whitlock, grandson of the New York cabinetmaker Duncan Phyfe (1768-1854), when he married Margaret Donaldson in Southbury, Connecticut. They were married at a house given by Duncan Phyfe to his daughter, Mary Phyfe Whitlock, mother of Duncan Phyfe Whitlock and wife of Captain Sidney B. Whitlock. The table was made by Duncan Phyfe circa 1840, when he was in partnership with his sons Michael (d. circa 1840) and James Duncan (b. 1797) under the name Duncan Phyfe and Son. It features highly-figured contrasting mahogany veneers, found on much of Phyfe's work of the period, and supports in the shape of lyres, a popular Classical motif associated with Apollo, patron of music and god of the sun. A set of nesting tables made for Duncan Phyfe and Son for Milford Plantation established a record for the form when it sold in these rooms, Important Americana, October 15, 1999, Sale 7350, lot 70 for $156,500. A ladies writing screen offered in these rooms, Important Americana, October 11, 2001, sale 7705, lot 233 was also made by Duncan Phyfe and Son for Milford Plantation.
