Stubbs (George, 1724-1806). Shooting, Plates I-IV, a set of four copper engravings by William Woollett after George Stubbs, pub. Thomas Bradford, 1st August 1769-25th October 1771, plate size 44.5 x 55.5 cm (17.5 x 21.75 ins), margins trimmed, some minor marks and final plate with a few short worm tracks to caption area, mounted on card The full set of Stubbs' shooting prints, engraved by Woollett, after the paintings exhibited at the Society of Artists between 1767 and 1770. The first plate was identified by Stubbs in the Society of Artists exhibition catalogue as Creswell Crags on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border, but not mentioned in the prints themselves. The verses printed below each image describe the appeal of this country pursuit, despite the fact that at the time, such activity was prohibited by the Game Act. See S. W.
