Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC: IMPORTANT AMERICAN, RUSSIAN AND EUROPEAN ART: Lot 108A
SERGEI SERGEEVICH GUBANSTEV (B1940), "Violin,"
SERGEI SERGEEVICH GUBANSTEV (B1940), "Violin," 2000, biro on paper, 69.5 x 48.5 cm (27 3/8 x 19 1/8 in.), signed and dated on the verso. Sergei Gubantsev is a fascinating artist who was long known and appreciated by other artists and a small circle of connoisseurs in Moscow (including Plavinsky, Sychev, and Costakis), but never to the greater public. Completely self-taught, Gubanstev only began to draw when he was 20 years old. His most important artistic relationship, was that with the cult figure of the Russian underground, Vasily Sitnikov. When several of Gubantsev's drawings made their way to the hands of Vasily Sitnikov, Sitnikov, rather than take on Gubantsev as a student, told him "You are already an artist." Gubanstev's friendship with Sitnikov, which began in 1965, would continue until Sitnikov's emigration in 1975. This work by Gubanstev is both incredibly detailed and evocative.
