A windmill near Pulborough, West Sussex pencil and watercolour, with scratching out 43/4 x 6 5/8 in. (12 x 16.3 cm.) PROVENANCE Bernard Allen, circa 1900 and by descent to Dr. Alison M. Bush; Sotheby's, London, 8 July 1982, lot 93. with Leger Galleries, London. LITERATURE R. Lister, Catalogue Raisonn‚ of the Works of Samuel Palmer, Cambridge, 1988, p. 171, no. 499. EXHIBITION London, Leger Galleries, English Watercolours, 1982, no. 18. London, Leger Galleries, Samuel Palmer Exhibition, 1992, no. 16 as 'Landscape with windmill'. NOTES The present highly worked watercolour appears to be a study for 'Summer Storm near Pulborough, Sussex' (Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, circa 1851), which was once in the collection of the Rt. Hon. Lord Joicey. (see R. Lister, op.cit. no. 500), 'Landscape with Windmill, Figures and Cattle' (Victoria and Albert Museum, London), which depicts a similar view with the windmill in reverse, may also be based on the present watercolour.
