Roderic O'Conor, R.H.A.
1860-1940
landscape, cote d'azur
inscribed R O'Conor on the reverse, and stamped Atelier O'CONOR
oil on board
37.5 by 46 cm., 14 3/4 by 18 in.
Just before the outbreak of the First World War, O'Conor made his first painting excursion to the South of France, following quite consciously in the footsteps of Cezanne, Bonnard and the Fauves. Like them, he was captivated by the bright southern light, which injected luminous colours into even the shadowed areas of the landscape. Based in the little Mediterranean fishing port of Cassis, he started to paint landscapes again after a break of a decade. Landscape, Cote d'Azur portrays part of the Montagne de la Canaille, which appeared in many of his paintings and became something of an obsession. The present picture would have been painted on the spot, the artist working quickly and impetuously in order to capture the glowing colours before the light changed. It relates quite closely to, and may even be a study for, a larger work entitled Orchard and Mountain, which was completed in the studio.
