Robert Demachy was amongst the foremost artist photographers of the Secessionist movement in France. His stature was confirmed by Alfred Stieglitz's invitation to feature in Camera Work in 1904. Demachy became a master of the gum bichromate process and in 1904 extended his technique to include G.H. Rawlins' oil pigment process.
