Head of a woman pencil and red and white chalks, on grey paper 10 3/8 x 12 3/8 in. (26.3 x 31.4 cm.) PROVENANCE with The Maas Gallery, London. NOTES Trained in traditional draftsmanship at the Royal Academy, Redgrave never lost his interest in technical drawing, and his great feeling for line and shading is evident here. He tended to make numerous studies of his models' heads and hands, building up what was almost a pattern book to which he could turn when working on a whole composition. In the present study the eyes are cast down while a slight smile plays about the lips, creating an aloof expression which recurs through Redgrave's work. In 'Sunday Morning: the Walk from Church', for example, and perhaps even more in the chalk study for the lovers in that painting, the young woman's head is cast teasingly askance. In 'The Governess' (1844), the head is bowed in saddened contemplation, and the present drawing may well relate to this more sombre painting in which a young woman in mourning dress holds a letter from the home she has evidently had to leave behind. Redgrave's fascination with the subject is evinced by his reworking of the composition in four different versions.
