Figures on a path on the Ligurian coast, Genoa in the distance inscribed 'Genoa' (upper left) and numbered '7' (lower left) pencil 41/2 x 7 5/8 in. (11.4 x 19.4 cm.) PROVENANCE P.M. Turner. Oliver D. Holt, 1965. LITERATURE The Hon. A. Shirley, Bonington, London, 1940, p. 109 as 'Descent to a Seaport, [?] Genoa'. EXHIBITION London, Burlington Fine Arts Club, R.P. Bonington and his Circle, 1937, no. 123. London, The Fine Art Society, Exhibition of Watercolours, Drawings and Oils by Early English Artists, November 1942, no. 16 as 'French Coast Scene'. Nottingham, Castle Museum, and London, The Arts Council of Great Britain, R.P. Bonington Exhibition, 10 April - 22 May 1965, no. 93 as 'Ligurian Coast'. London, Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox, The Lure of Rome Some Northern Artists in Italy in the Nineteenth Century, 31 October - 27 November 1979, no. 59, exhibition catalogue pl. 67. NOTES The present drawing was made during Bonington's eleven week tour of Italy with his friend Baron Charles Rivet, whose diary records a stop in Genoa on their journey from La Spezia to Turin between 7 and 11 June. The Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox catalogue records that Dr. Marion Spencer confirmed that the inscription is in Bonington's hand and suggests that the number may be the last of several digits. A pencil drawing inscribed 'Genoa', dated to 1826 is illustrated in C. Peacock, Richard Parkes Bonington, London, 1979, p. 64.
