NOTE
Dives is a port on the Normandy coast situated half way between Caen and Trouville. It was from here that William the Conqueror launched his invasion of England in 1066. Bonington visited Dives in the Autumn of 1821 on his first trip to Normandy. There is a fine finished watercolour of the Eglise Notre Dame, Dives in the Walker Art Gallery, together with a graphite study which is dated 1821. The drawings which he made during this tour, often depict architectural studies of buildings and are the earliest examples of his graphite technique
