Extremely Rare Redware Rhinoceros Bank, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, large-sized, hand-modeled bank in the form of a fat-bodied rhinoceros with curled tail, applied horn and ears, its body covered with applied layers of armor-like hide. The figure's eyes are produced from an impressed circular stamp. Incised detail to hooves, tip of tail, and edge of oval base. Carved slot in figure's back. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. A phenomenal folk art form of imposing size, possibly inspired by a potter's visit to a zoo or circus. This bank is the only example in the form of a rhinoceros we are aware of. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. One ear missing. In-the-firing separation line from slot, measuring 1" long. Length 7 1/2" ; H 4 1/2".
