Very Rare Large-Sized Redware Owl Bank, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, large-sized, hand-modeled bank in the form of an owl perched on a stump. Owl is embellished with V-shaped incising on reverse, incised spots on chest, fine incising to applied feet, and additional incised detail to wings. Owl's face modeled in a wonderful folky style, with large horns and oversized eyes surrounded by radiating incised lines. Stump features incised bark and applied sawed limbs. Slot in reverse of owl's head. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Exceptional form and size. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. Excellent condition with small base chip and minor chip to right horn of owl. H 8 1/8".
