Extremely Rare Redware Bank in the Form of a Dog with Stump, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, large-sized, hand-modeled bank in the form of dog standing on his hind legs, his front legs pressed against a tree stump. Dog features heavily-incised fur, a curled tail, incised facial details, and anatomically correct underside. Stump is embellished with applied sawed limbs and heavily-incised bark. Dog and stump are seated atop an oval base with edge embellished with incised dots. Carved slot in stump. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Outstanding form surviving in remarkable condition. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. As-made condition with an in-the-firing separation in one of dog's paws. H 4 7/8" ; L 6 1/8".
