Very Rare Redware Cat Bank, Pennsylvania origin, 19th century, hand-modeled bank in the form of a seated cat with large head and incised facial features, a bow tied around its neck. Cat assumes a humorous posture with widely-spaced legs ending in small feet with incised toes. An applied tail curls around the cat's side. Surface incised with fur and covered in a clear lead glaze. Carved slot in rear of cat's head. A wonderful folk art representation of a cat, created with a sense of whimsy, and surviving in remarkable condition. Provenance: Christie's Sale of the Seamen's Bank Collection, March 13, 1991. Near mint condition with very minor wear to tips of ears. H 5 1/4" ; Width 4".
