Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data
Description: RARE SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED EARTHENWARE PLATE, lead and mottled manganese glazes over a yellow slip wash, shallow form with simple beaded rim, unglazed back. Attributed to Anthony Weis Bacher/Baecher (1824-1889), Frederick Co., VA or MD.
Condition Report: Near mint with only a single flake to glaze, small rough spot to rim.
Notes: To our knowledge no plates have been previously attributed to Anthony Bacher. He is known to have produced simple table wares like cups and pitchers, so it is reasonable to associate common plates with his manufactory. The style of this plate's glazed decoration is closely associated with Bacher and the color of the clay is identical to the bear-form inkstand in this auction.
Dimensions: 1 1/2" H, 8 3/4" D.
Literature: Glaze as Comstock - Shenandoah Pottery, p. 170, fig. 4.256.
Date: Circa 1855-1885.
