RARE SET OF ANTIQUE AMERICAN FEDERAL CHAIRS Circa 1800
In mahogany. Ten matching side chairs and two armchairs. It is rare to find ten side chairs that match, and it is possible that the armchairs came from the same shop, as the differences are subtle. All with shield-form backs with four bowed slats attached at the seat by a floral crescent with thumbnail, reeded and bead carving. All with shaped seats and tapered legs ending in spade feet. Armchairs with minor differences. Each with reeded fronts to the legs. One armchair with rosettes on the arm fronts, and one armchair with chalk signature of "S. Loudon" on the interior of the back seat frame.
An almost identical shield back is illustrated in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, Vol. V. Highland House Publishers, Inc., 1974 and Nutting, Wallace, Furniture Treasury Vol II, plate 2360, MacMillan Co., NY, 1971.

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000
