RANDOLPH ROGERS , American, 1825-1892 White marble figure of Nydia, the blind flower girl of Pompeii, in a running posture beside a fallen capital. Circa 1855. Signed "Randolph Rogers, Rome". Together with a cylinder-form brown and white marble column/pedestal, height 40". The blind flower girl is the heroine of Sir Edward George Bulwer-Lytton's novel The Last Days of Pompeii, a copy of which was exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 to rave reviews from the public.Randolph Rogers was born in Waterloo, NY. He was sent by his employers to train in Florence in 1848. He trained under Lorenzo Bartolini until his death, then moved to Rome where he worked for over 20 years. His work became very popular and his first public commission was for a life-sized figure of John Adams for Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. He went on to do many popular sculptures, the figure of Nydia may well have been his most popular work.
