American, 1910-1982

"Nantucket Incident", depicting a sailor pushing a mermaid in a wheelbarrow down the tree-lined cobble-stoned Main Street of Nantucket, with two of the "Three Bricks" in the background. In 1835, Nantucket's whale oil tycoon Joseph Starbuck constructed these three homes for his three sons, George, Matthew and William. The houses were constructed of the finest material available: imported brick. He also named one of his whale ships "Three Brothers" after his three sons. Signed lower right "R. Cahoon".
