Description: RALPH EUGENE CAHOON JR.
American, 1910-1982
"Blue Monday at Nantucket", depicting four mermaids doing their laundry in front of The Pacific Club.
Located at the foot of Main Street on the Nantucket waterfront, the Pacific Club was originally built in 1772 by the wealthy whaling merchant William Rotch as a store house. The sign on the building refers to the Rotch-owned whaling ships Dartmouth, Beaver, and Eleanor. In 1773 these three ships were sent to England loaded with whale oil and were set to return to Boston with a cargo of English tea. It was the tea from these three ships that started the famous Boston Tea Party in December of 1773. Signed lower right "R. Cahoon".
