RALPH EUGENE CAHOON, JR.
American, 1910-1982
"New Bedford", depicting a busy wharf scene with three docked whaleships with sailors on deck and in rigging. Foremost ship with mermaid figurehead. Foreground with horse-drawn wagon decorated with a whaling scene and marked "Cape Cod Boston New Bedford". Four mermaids and three sailors in or on the wagon, and a sailor and mermaid ride on the horses. In background a mermaid paints the name "Martha" on a rowboat next to another rowboat named "Ann". Nautical objects abound with more mermaids and sailors. Ship carver's building to right with a mermaid being hoisted up in a basket as another mermaid is being helped into a lower window. Quarterboard to her left reads "Ship Paintings R. Cahoon". This is undoubtedly one of the finest of Ralph Cahoon's paintings that Eldred's has had the pleasure to sell.
Oil on masonite, 28" x 38½". Framed.
