Elizabeth Van Horne (Mrs. Cornelius Van Horne) signed "Earl" and dated "1788", lower left - - oil on canvas 32 1/4 x 27 in. (81.7 x 68.5 cm.) PROVENANCE The sitter Augustus Van Horne Ellis, his daughter John Stoneacre Ellis, her son Augustus Van Horne Ellis, his son Ashfield Ellis Stow, his nephew By descent through the sitter's family Mrs. Van Horne was the wife of a prominent New York merchant in the 18th Century. Her husband was a descendant of Jan Cornelissen Van Hoorn, who arrived in New Amsterdam, circa 1640. He was related by marriage to the descendants of Governer Peter Stuyvesant.
