RALPH CAHOON
(American, 1910-1982)
NANTUCKET FISH CO.
oil on masonite;
signed and dated R. Cahoon 1971, l.r.;
16 x 20 inches
Provenance: Prominent Nantucket Family; by descent to current owner
Other Notes: The original owner of this painting suffered a fire in the late 1960's in which a painting of this same subject was lost. Cahoon went to Nantucket and painted another in 1971 to replace the original, where it has remained in the family since. The references in the painting include the 'Nantucket Fish Co', founded in Cahoon's hometown of Chatham, Mass and 'Vigouroux', a reference to George Vigouroux, owner of the Lobster Pot Gallery, that regularly exhibited Cahoon's work in the 1960's and 1970's.
