Prototype: Classic "Davenport" Writing Desk, c. 1985 Named after Captain Davenport who designed this ingenious and practical piece of furniture for cabinet maker Gillows of London, c. 1790. Gillows, in turn, ensured that the Davenport became the most popular form of writing desk during the 19th century. This well-made American prototype was built as an exhibition piece for a large Philadelphia department store. Fully functional, it features for dovetailed drawers, leather-covered burgundy writing surface with embossed gilt borders, 3 secret drawers, and a beautifully carved accompanying chair by the same maker. Size: 25 x 21 2/3 x 40 in. - A handsome desk in pristine condition, perfect for use at home or as part of a classical office exhibition.
