No American achieved the same degree of classical perfection in sculpture as Gaston Lachaise who, like Matisse and Picasso, used the portrait bust as a means to explore concepts of ideal beauty and formulate abstract principles about mass, surface, and line. The surface treatment prefigures that of Henry Moore in his reclining torsos of the 1940s and 50s.
