(33.3 x 48 cm) painted circa 1860 provenance Sotheby Parke Bernet Inc., new york, February 1-4, 1978, 742, as Sunrise at Labrador Private Collection, new york According to Richard Kugler of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, "the cliffs and combination of vessels suggest Grand Manan, or possibly Nova Scotia, rather than [a location] farther north." He further suggests that the scene depicts a sunset rather than dawn and dates the work circa 1860. Our thanks to Richard Kugler for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
