SURFACE: in good condition, generally; relining has compressed surface, but there is still somse texture in more thickly painted areas and retention of color and details is excellent; scattered craquelure (stable)--stretcher marks and some abrasion along edges ("milky lines" along edges appear to be old repaints) UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: scattered lines of inpaint along edges (visible to naked eye--see above); a few scattered spots in sky

CATALOGUE NOTE
Affixed to the backing is an old photograph of the reverse of the original canvas (before relining) with the following inscription by the hand of the artist: By Tho" Birch/ Phila 18**. A typewritten note placed over it and signed by S. Morton Vose (no date) explains that Mr. Vose had seen the original inscription and the date was 1827.
