CATALOGUE NOTE
Though born in Antwerp Bril is recorded as a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome by 1582. His active membership in the Accademia culminated in his post as principal there in 1620. Though Bril's early landscapes are closer to Flemish prototypes his later works, i.e. those that post-date 1605, are more greatly influenced by those of his contemporaries in Rome, such as Annibale Carracci and Adam Elsheimer.
The date, which is indistinct but may read 1621, perfectly concords with other works dating from the early 1620s: compare, for example, the Landscape with Shepherds offered in London, Christie's, 4 July 1997, lot 40, and the Landscape with golfers, which is dated 1624, in The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (see European Paintings from The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, New York 1971, pp. 136-7, cat. no. 72, reproduced). On the basis of transparencies only, Drs. Luuk Pijl has endorsed the attribution to Bril, but does not rule out that there may be some studio participation.
