CATALOGUE NOTE
Painted in 1901.
Thaulow spent from July until November 1901 in the small town of Quimperlé in Brittany, where he painted numerous works of the town and surrounding countryside, including Washerwomen at Quimperlé, which he submitted to the 1902 Paris Salon. The present work features the same bridge, the Pont fleuri, as the Salon work.
With artists flocking to nearby Pont Aven in Gauguin's footsteps, Quimperlé was frequented by a number of painters at the turn of the century. Postcards from the turn of the century show the small round medieval-looking structure on the left of the painting, as well as the modest buildings to the right, suggesting that Thaulow 's views were true to nature. It seems that the only licence he used was to add the wall along the river on the right in order to balance the composition, a device he frequently employed.
